This is first installment of the Open Media Web series, featuring Lucas Gonze of Yahoo!, recorded at the Neue Songbird Nest in San Francisco during the second Open Media Web Meetup called Portable Playlists and other POSH-ibilities.
In this interview, conducted by Chris Messina and Brian Oberkirch, Lucas discusses his thoughts on the Open Media Web, on user-respectful business models and coercive business practices, and business opportunities for open systems and data. He ends by discussing a simple and straightforward thing that web developers can do today to support the media web.

Great episode! I’m psyched to see more. I’m working on a very similar project re: future of music and media and can’t wait to share!
So when did someone at Yahoo! start making so much sense? I guess I’ve been working with their ad sales folks for two long and may be jaded in my perception of all Yahooligans.
Well said, Lucas. And here’s to hoping the common sense is picked up by many!

Isn´t it a bit “strange” to talk about open media and then use flash as a container format? flash defies all explanations of open in every possible way, and especially if you want to give a “url to a media file”. I url to a “flash video” is like hiding a webpage inside a flashfile - its closed can´t be accessed by future technology is highly proprietary owned by one big evil company that can pull the plug on anything if it wants to, its highly insecure and gives a lot of overhead to any media file - not making it play on slower computers - so generally is also bad for accessibility.
I never expected to come to a site called “openmedia.org” and find flash all over the place - its hypocrism in its purest form and makes me believe that the builders of this site are only in the game for the traffic the url gives them and not for the spirit of and belief in open … at least it should have been discussed….

[...] So there’s hope that the people buying Plaxo will respect this. I’m still wary and with reason. Why would they put themselves for sale with my data as an asset? And like themselves say, they are a true exception on this matter. What’s happening with my data in all the social silos? I have accepted Terms that state that I’m actually offering it (Facebook is but an example). But really, shouldn’t we be raising our expectations? [...]
